This year, I bought a T-shirt that combines the German and American flags for the World Cup. I call myself a "dual-fan."

Looking at the shirt more closely, though, it is probably a pretty good reflection of my own life. ;-)

I have been in the United States since 2000 and have dual citizenship. I was born and raised in Germany, but I have spent most of my adult life here. My children spoke German at home while growing up in the United States. My son is a pediatrician in Denver, and my daughter lives in London and is engaged to an Irishman, so our family's cultural story continues to evolve.

Tomorrow, as the United States of America celebrates its 250th birthday, I'll take a moment to reflect and express my gratitude for the life I was able to build here.

Happy 250th Birthday, USA, and Happy Fourth of July to you all!

And when Team USA takes the field again on Monday, you'll find me wearing both flags and cheering them on. 🇺🇸🇩🇪⚽
