🦶🌲 THE STORY OF HAPPY CAMP’S BIGFOOT
North Gate Digest

If you’ve traveled through Happy Camp, California, you’ve probably seen him—the giant metal Bigfoot standing along Highway 96! 👀

But did you know this famous roadside landmark was made from scrap metal? 🔧♻️

In 2001, Happy Camp resident Cheryl Wainwright helped organize a community river cleanup. Rather than letting the collected metal go to waste, she envisioned turning it into something representing Happy Camp’s connection to the legendary Sasquatch.

🗿 Sculptor Ralph Starritt transformed donated pieces of metal—including wire, cable, chain, rebar and tubing—into the towering Bigfoot sculpture.

🌲 The choice was fitting. Happy Camp sits along the Klamath River in an area well known for Bigfoot stories and sightings. The community has also celebrated the legend for decades through its Bigfoot Jamboree, which began in 1966.

📸 A Personal Bigfoot Moment

Today I found myself in Happy Camp with one of my daughters for her school volleyball game 🏐. Since we were already in town, I took advantage of the opportunity to stop by and snap a selfie with Happy Camp’s famous Bigfoot! 🦶📱

It was a fun little roadside moment—and a chance to appreciate the history behind one of Northern California’s most unusual landmarks.

From river cleanup ♻️ → scrap metal 🔧 → roadside legend 🦶, Happy Camp turned a pile of discarded material into a community symbol.
