Hi everyone, fall is upon us! Time to say goodbye to summer and get your house ready for fall and winter. You may not have given this much thought, but to make your cooler months more seamless, here are a few ideas to help you prep.

Exterior Maintenance
• Clear out gutters and inspect your roof for any damage to prevent leaks. This will reduce the possibility of added damage from water, ice and debris diring storms.
• Have a professional inspect and service your furnace or heating system to ensure it runs efficiently and safely. Chances are that your aging utility appliances will fail when stressed which is usually the time that is least convenient to you and your family.
• Inspect around windows and doors for cracks and caulk them to prevent drafts. Sealing gaps and cracks keeps the cold out, as well as insects and other critters looking for a warm place in winter.
• Shut off water to outdoor faucets and disconnect garden hoses to protect pipes from freezing.
Interior Maintenance
• Swap out your furnace or heat pump filters to improve air quality and energy efficiency.
• Replace batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working properly.
• Switch your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to help circulate warm air and keep your home warmer.
• Check your chimney and fireplace for damage or blockages before you start using them for the season.
Yard and Lawn Care
• Rake leaves from your lawn to help your grass stay healthy for the spring. Too heavy of a leaf layer can stifle lawn growth
• Fertilize your lawn in late fall to help it grow green, healthy and vibrant in the spring.
• Trim trees and branches close to your home to prevent damage from falling limbs during storms.
