You only know this if you visit Boston Massachusetts.

Tell someone from Massachusetts that something is "wicked good" and you're not describing anything evil, you're using one of the most recognizable regional intensifiers in American English, and it's been documented that way for well over a century. 🗣️

Linguists who study New England dialect trace "wicked" as an intensifier, meaning something closer to "very" or "extremely," back to at least the 1800s, long before it became a punchline in movies and stand up routines about Boston accents. The word works like "really" or "super" does everywhere else, except it stacks onto almost any adjective without sounding out of place to a native speaker, wicked cold, wicked far, wicked smart, all perfectly normal sentences inside Massachusetts and much of the rest of New England. Outside the region, people tend to assume it's exaggerated slang invented for television, when in practice most Massachusetts residents use it without noticing, the same way someone from the South doesn't notice "y'all."

Films like Good Will Hunting introduced the word to a national audience in a way that flattened it into shorthand for the entire Boston accent, even though the intensifier shows up across Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island too, not just eastern Massachusetts. Linguists studying the dialect note that younger speakers in the region still use it constantly, suggesting it isn't fading the way some regional slang eventually does.

A word that sounds like an insult everywhere else in the country just means "very" once you cross into New England. What's a word or phrase from home that outsiders always assume you're exaggerating?

Amazing how we’re trying to go back in time with affordable housing…

If you want to understand Fall River, count the porches. 🏘️

Out of roughly 17,700 buildings in the city, more than 4,100 are triple deckers. Three floors, one family per floor, one shared front staircase, three stacked porches on the face of the building. They started appearing in New England mill cities in the second half of the 1800s and exploded after the Civil War, when the textile mills were pulling in workers faster than the city could house them. Before that, families were crowding into cellars, stables, and even tents.

The triple decker solved something real. It let a working family buy a building, live on one floor, and rent the other two to cover the note. That is a large part of why so many are still standing and still full. The name, by the way, came from the British man of war, a warship with three gun decks.

They were called ugly for most of the 20th century and cities tried to zone them out of existence. Now planners study them as a model for housing people can actually afford. 🔨

Move toward Central Mass and it’s history, tight-knit communities, and that underrated charm people don’t talk about enough—but locals will defend it every time. 😤

Then you hit Greater Boston… and yeah, the whole pace changes. Fast walks, faster opinions, world-class everything, and just enough chaos to keep you on your toes. One second it’s historic streets, next second it’s innovation and skyline views. ☕🏙️

Go north and you’ve got the North Shore—rocky coastlines, seafood spots that people argue about like it’s a sport, and that salty ocean air that just hits different. 🌊🦞

Head south and it softens a bit—the South Shore’s got beaches, family towns, and that steady, comfortable rhythm of everyday life by the water. 🏖️

And then there’s Cape Cod & the Islands… where everything slows down, traffic somehow speeds up, and the vibe shifts into pure escape mode—lighthouses, ocean breeze, and memories waiting to happen. 🚗🌅

No matter where you are, you’ll find the things that make Massachusetts feel like Massachusetts— Dunkin’ runs that are basically a routine, conversations that sound aggressive but aren’t, roads that test your patience, and people who might seem tough at first… but will absolutely help you out when it counts. 😅

Massachusetts has a lot of personalities.
But that sharp, proud, “we know who we are” kind of energy?

Yeah… that’s what ties the whole state together.

Only in Massachusetts could you start your morning in Sandwich, drive past Ware, swing through Athol, and somehow end up explaining to your GPS that “yes… these are all real places.” 😭

It’s the kind of state where the map feels historic… until you actually read it out loud. You can pass through Belchertown, roll by North Adams, cut across Middleborough, and suddenly find yourself telling someone you’re headed to Braintree—and now they’ve got questions.

Take a detour toward Nantucket, cruise past Gloucester, swing through Worcester (and argue about how to pronounce it), and before you know it, you’re texting your friends directions they don’t believe exist.

Throw in places like Holyoke, Pittsfield, and Eastham, and it starts to feel less like a road trip and more like Massachusetts quietly testing you.

God bless Massachusetts—where the roads are historic, the accents are strong, and every time you say where you’re going, someone has to stop and ask:
“Wait… how do you even say that?”

Yes. Yes, it’s real.
