Oldest timber frame house exists in Dedham, Massachusetts from 1637.

The oldest timber frame house still standing in North America is on a quiet street in Dedham, Massachusetts, and it looks every bit its age. 🏚️

Jonathan and Grace Fairbanks built it around 1637 for themselves and their six children. Tree ring dating on the great oak summer beam that spans the hall confirms the timber was felled that year. The frame was cut green and joined with wooden pegs called trunnels rather than nails, and as the wood dried it shrank and locked itself tight, which is a real part of why the thing is still upright nearly four centuries later.

Eight generations of the same family lived in it across 268 years, adding lean tos and wings as they needed them, which is why the roofline sags and wanders and the whole house looks like it grew rather than got built. Nobody ever modernized it in any serious way. It became a house museum in 1904 and a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

Standing in front of it, the thing that gets you is the scale. This was a substantial house for its moment, and it is smaller than plenty of garages built today.

Only in Massachusetts could you start your morning in Sandwich, drive past Ware, swing through Athol, and somehow end up explaining to your GPS that “yes… these are all real places.” 😭

It’s the kind of state where the map feels historic… until you actually read it out loud. You can pass through Belchertown, roll by North Adams, cut across Middleborough, and suddenly find yourself telling someone you’re headed to Braintree—and now they’ve got questions.

Take a detour toward Nantucket, cruise past Gloucester, swing through Worcester (and argue about how to pronounce it), and before you know it, you’re texting your friends directions they don’t believe exist.

Throw in places like Holyoke, Pittsfield, and Eastham, and it starts to feel less like a road trip and more like Massachusetts quietly testing you.

God bless Massachusetts—where the roads are historic, the accents are strong, and every time you say where you’re going, someone has to stop and ask:
“Wait… how do you even say that?”
