A Message from Oklahoma REALTORS® President Bryan Sheppard:
I want to bring you an important, direct message about SB 1217, which is currently making its way through the Oklahoma Legislature.
There is a lot of misinformation about this bill going around right now, on social media and in private groups. I believe some people are missing the big picture because of conflicting information.
So, I want to set the record straight on SB 1217 with four points about our work on this bill, and I’d ask you to pay special attention to point number four.
1️⃣Oklahoma REALTORS® has been working with the Oklahoma Real Estate Commission on SB 1217 since 2025 to find appropriate language and make this bill the best it can be for both consumers and practitioners of real estate. Oklahoma REALTORS® understands the intent of a bill is important, but the devil is always in the details. We have concerns that the current language of SB 1217 would cause more confusion for both REALTORS® and consumers. No REALTOR®, nor licensee, nor consumer, wants more confusion in the marketplace.
2️⃣For the life of this bill, Oklahoma REALTORS® has maintained a “Monitor” status, a decision established through our legislative decision-making framework that includes the Government Affairs Committee and the Executive Committee. This means we have not lobbied against the bill, nor have we lobbied for its passage.
3️⃣“Monitor” does not mean “Neutral”. Monitor means we recognize this bill could have an impact on the industry, and we will seek improvement or amendment to more closely align with the policy position of the Association and what is best for REALTOR® members, real estate practitioners in general, and consumers.
4️⃣Oklahoma REALTORS® has requested an amendment to SB 1217, and below is the exact language requested. Please read the amendment, and ask yourself: Does this amendment make it clear about what is allows? Does it provide clarity for both consumers and REALTORS®?
