National Cannoli Day, observed annually on June 16, celebrates the iconic Sicilian pastry made of a fried dough cylinder filled with sweet ricotta. It honors a dessert with over a millennium of history, tracing back to the Arab domination of Sicily between the 9th and 11th centuries.
The Rich History of CannoliArabic Origins: Historians trace the roots of the cannolo to the city of Caltanissetta, Sicily (between 827 and 1091), when Arabic influences introduced sugarcane, almonds, and traditional ricotta preparation to the island.
Convent Legends: According to local legend, the recipe was perfected inside convents. Nuns in Palermo are said to have created the first cannoli as a festive, celebratory treat for the Carnevale (the season just before Lent).
Meaning: The word "cannoli" translates to "little tubes" in Italian, describing the shape of the fried pastry shell. Historically, they were also considered symbols of luck and fertility.
Coming to America: The pastry was brought to the United States by Sicilian immigrants during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It quickly became a staple in Italian-American bakeries in cities like New York and Boston.
