Sherwood Island State Park and Connecticut's Fight for Public Beaches

Before it became Connecticut's first state park, Sherwood Island was a Pequot homeland, working farmland, and later a retreat for wealthy estate owners. When the state attempted to open the shoreline to the public, powerful landowners fought back, triggering a 23-year battle over beach access. The fight ended in 1937, when Governor Wilbur Cross secured New Deal funding and turned Sherwood Island into a public park for all.

Connecticut's Birth Control Ban Reached the Supreme Court

In 1961, using birth control in Connecticut was still a crime. Under a law dating back to 1879, the state prohibited not only contraception itself, but even discussions about it. Determined to challenge the ban, activist Estelle Griswold and Yale physician C. Lee Buxton opened a birth control clinic in New Haven and were promptly arrested. Their case, Griswold v. Connecticut, reached the Supreme Court and led to a landmark ruling that legalized contraception for married couples.

New Data Reveals a Stark Divide in Connecticut Education

An analysis by Stanford University's Educational Opportunity Project compared math and reading test scores for students in grades 3-8 between 2022 and 2025. By converting state assessment results onto a common national scale, researchers were able to compare schools and districts across Connecticut against the 2019 U.S. average. The results reveal stark differences in academic performance that closely track poverty levels and persist even as schools continue to recover from pandemic-related learning losses.

How Tiny Parade Cars Helped Build A Hospital Network

Founded in New York in 1870, the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine began as a more theatrical and social offshoot of Freemasonry. Known for fezzes, parades, marching bands, and public spectacle, the organization eventually evolved into a major charitable force. During the polio epidemic of the 1920s, the Shriners opened their first children’s hospital, growing over time into a network of 22 medical facilities across North America supported by one of the country’s largest charitable endowments.
