Bullitt County residents will be able to recycle old and broken Christmas lights strands and extension cords beginning next week. The program runs from Monday, Dec. 2, 2024 to Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025.

Holiday light strings contain plastic, glass, copper, and even lead. If you toss your lights in the trash they will sit in a landfill for years with the risk of harming land and our water supply.

The drop-off locations will accept most types of loose light bulbs strands, including conventional and LED strands. Larger electrical decorations containing motors or projectors cannot be dropped off and should instead be bought to the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Scrap event in April 2025. If lights are wound around decorations, they must be removed from the decor before placed in the recycle trailer.
