Not every closing feels like a celebration.
Today, I’m thinking about my sellers.
This property was more than a home to them. It was part of their life. Over the years, they planted trees, cared for the land, watched things grow and created memories there.
Eventually, caring for it all became more than they could comfortably manage. Selling was the right decision. But that doesn’t make leaving any easier.
There can be a tendency in real estate to focus on the happy endings—the sold sign, the closing table, the next chapter. But sometimes a closing also comes with deep sadness and grief.
As their listing agent, I feel some of that sadness too. I know we accomplished what we set out to do, and I know this move was necessary. Still, it’s hard to watch someone say goodbye to a place that meant so much to them.
I think two things can be true at once: you can know you made the right decision and still deeply mourn what you are leaving behind.
Real estate is about homes and property, but at its heart, it’s about people. And sometimes our job is simply to help someone through a difficult transition with as much care, patience, and understanding as we can.
