Rest in peace to the penny. After more than two centuries of loyal service, the humble one-cent coin has finally been laid to rest... its last mint happened in November 2025. You could often find these treasures in couch cushions, car center consoles, or those little trays at the gas station when the change wasn't exactly right.
The penny used to mean something. Maybe in your day, it meant buying a gumball, or a few of them could get you a soda, or a collection of them could get you on your way to a little rainy day fund. They say you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain. The penny? It was so noble that it didn't really do either. We can't all be as pristine or dramatic as a crisp 50 dollar bill.
Inflation chewed the poor thing down and took it from us far too soon. Consider this: it would only take 50,000,000 pennies to afford a $500,000 house in Northbridge. Now that's something worth thinking about.
Rest in peace, you heroic little disc. May flights of piggy banks carry thee to thy eternal reward. Pinch your pennies close. You never know how long they're going to be around!
