Will the Fed cut rates again in December? Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said it was "not a foregone conclusion," but then the ADP jobs report showed very modest growth, and home price growth continued to slow. ​

Transaction volumes are starting to pick up in response to lower mortgage rates: pending home sales climbed 4% month-over-month in August, and should improve further in September. The very weak ADP jobs report for September also has the markets convinced that we'll get two more Fed rate cuts before year-end. ​

The BLS jobs report showed that the US added just 22K jobs in August, and the figure for June was revised to a negative number! This convinced the market that at least 2, and maybe 3, Fed rate cuts will happen before year-end. Average mortgage rates plunged in response.​ ​

As expected, the Federal Reserve kept rates unchanged. But two members dissented (very unusual for the Fed), preferring to cut rates 25 bps. Meanwhile, home price growth continues to slow, but remains positive at the nationwide level. ​
