Nearly one hundred years for this Greenville building.

Nearly one hundred years for this Greenville building.

Beacham & Legrand designed the new ten-story Chamber of Commerce building at Court Square with J.E. Sirrine & Co. as the engineers. Mintor-Homes Company started the construction and Potter-Shackleford Co. finished the job after the former went bankrupt. The top photo from 1924 shows the building under construction (it opened in 1925). The Palmetto Building (offices) is on the left. The chamber had great ambition to ride the tide of the swelling economy with its impressive new building (sound familiar? The 1920s were very similar to today’s Greenville with its boom of growth and change), though it was unable to weather the storm caused by the Great Depression. However, one local business, Liberty Life Insurance Co., grew strong during those tough years and took over the Chamber of Commerce building in 1931. Liberty outgrew the building by 1968 and moved into its new office complex on Wade Hampton Boulevard. The old chamber building was leased until it was sold in 1977 and given to North Greenville College to hold downtown classes. Needed improvements came in 1983 from Atlanta investors, and five years later the building underwent further renovations. A few decades ago it was bought by Mark Kent, who brought further updates to the building. Today it has various office tenants and is approaching its 100th year.
