Sioux Falls' brand-new $19 million park just won the top public space award in the entire world.

It's Jacobson Plaza downtown, built on a former industrial site that sat underused for 20 years.

It features a 26,000 square foot inclusive playground, our largest splash pad, and the city's first outdoor refrigerated skating ribbon.

The ribbon is 530 feet long — nearly 2 football fields. You can roller skate here in summer, but in winter, underground pipes turn it into an ice track.

But this global award wasn't actually for building any of this.

An international association gave us the top honor for how the park is run. They're rewarding daily operations, not just the construction.

And the numbers prove it works. In its first 6 months, the plaza drew over 250,000 visitors — more than our entire population. Better yet, 80% are from right here in town.

And the park is already getting bigger.

A new $2.6 million donation is funding a scenic overlook facing the upper falls, on track to finish by the end of September 2026.

Sioux Falls is getting a giant 300-acre mega-development, and construction's already started.

Crews are already moving dirt on East 6th Street and Veterans Parkway, right next to Menards.

They're building a 118,000 square foot shopping center—which is about the size of 2 football fields.

Usually, developments add stores slowly over a decade, but this project is launching 5 major brands all at once.

Hobby Lobby, Ross, Five Below, and Petco are all opening their second city locations here.

But the 5th store is completely new to us—an outdoor and lifestyle brand called Sierra.

The name Foss Fields itself has a deep local history.

Former Governor and World War 2 pilot Joe Foss used to fly planes off a runway cut right through this family cornfield.

Those 5 stores plan to open by late 2027, and the developer is already under contract with multiple restaurant groups for the surrounding lots.

A giant $135 million airport expansion is coming to Sioux Falls.

We're building a brand new concourse at the airport to add 5 new gates, bringing our total to 12.

This adds 70,000 square feet of space—which is bigger than a football field—for a large restaurant, more seating, and a three-season patio.

So why does our airport need this much room?

Our passenger traffic's grown by an average of 3.5% a year for the last 25 years, and 2025 broke all-time records.

Because of that, gate areas designed for 50 to 60 people are now being packed with flights of up to 180 passengers.

It's gotten so tight that crews have to tow 2 or 3 planes away from the gates overnight just to make room.

But the extra gates aren't even the most exciting thing we might get.

The airport is studying a plan for a customs facility, which could bring international flights directly to places like Cancun.

The new gates are scheduled to open in mid-to-late June 2027, but the restaurant and central lobby will take another 8 to 10 months to finish.

A huge $550 million food factory is wrapping up construction in Sioux Falls.

It sits in Foundation Park, covers roughly 700,000 square feet, and stretches longer than 12 football fields.

So what are they actually making inside a space this giant?

They're installing giant production lines to make Bibigo dumplings and Pagoda egg rolls for customers all across North America.

So what does this actually mean for Sioux Falls?

They plan to hire about 650 people total between this new plant and their downtown regional office.

They're hiring electricians and refrigeration technicians right now, but the main hiring push for production workers starts in mid-October of 2026.

That gives new hires plenty of time to train before they officially open the doors in mid-2027.
