It might be time to give your house a little more character.

I’ve wanted to bring these to Sioux Falls for a while.

When Betsy and I were in Savannah and Charleston, I couldn’t stop looking at the gas lanterns. They’re on homes, restaurants and storefronts all over—and pictures really don’t capture how beautiful that flickering flame looks at night.

I’ve had people ask me about installing them before, but sourcing a quality lamp has always been the problem.

Well, I finally found the right manufacturer.

I’ll be offering handcrafted Bevolo gas lanterns through Austin Wolf LLC. They have a ton of different styles and sizes, and they can be set up for natural gas or propane.

AUSTIN WOLF LLC DOES A LOT MORE THAN YOUR TYPICAL PLUMBING JOBS.

Faucets, toilets, drains and water heaters are only part of what I do.

Boiler systems, radiant-floor heat, on-demand water heaters and high-efficiency combi systems are specialty work—and this is where experience matters. These systems have to be properly sized, piped, vented and set up to work correctly.

This project involved removing an outdated boiler and installing a new high-efficiency Weil-McLain system.

If you’re considering an on-demand water heater, a combi boiler or a complete boiler-system replacement, give me a shout. I’ll put my boiler work up against anybody’s.

This is one of the most dangerous homeowner installations I have seen in more than 20 years of plumbing.

They purchased an electric water heater when the home required a gas water heater—and then connected the natural-gas supply directly to the temperature and pressure relief valve.

That valve is an emergency safety device. It is NOT a gas connection.

If someone had opened that gas valve, raw natural gas could have leaked into the room. One spark from a light switch, electrical connection, appliance, or anything else could have caused a fire or explosion. It also could have displaced oxygen and killed someone inside the home.

This isn’t a crooked pipe or a small code violation. This is the kind of mistake that can destroy a home and take lives.

I am all for homeowners learning how their homes work—but gas piping, electrical work, and safety devices are not things to guess your way through.

Please hire licensed professionals.

Sometimes your life depends on it.

For those who may not know me, my name is Austin Wolf, and I own Austin Wolf LLC.

I have been plumbing for more than 20 years. I complete new construction projects from the ground up, basement finishes, remodels, water heaters, repairs, and everyday service calls. I am a licensed master plumber, and I also offer general contracting services for customers who want one person overseeing their project and coordinating the work from beginning to end.

No job is too big or too small.

I am licensed to perform plumbing work inside Sioux Falls and throughout South Dakota. I pull the required permits, have my work inspected, and stand behind everything I install. When you hire me, you deal directly with the owner. It is my name on the job, and that means something to me.

This is especially important with basement finishes and new bathrooms. If an unlicensed plumber does the work without the proper permits and inspections, it can come back to cost you when you sell your house. Realtors check permit records, and an unpermitted bathroom can be docked from the value of your home. Saving a little money upfront is not always cheaper in the long run.

I take an almost OCD level of care with my projects and my customers. I want the work done correctly, I want it to look good, and I want you to feel comfortable calling me again. Most of my business has been built through repeat customers and word of mouth. My customers know they can call me day or night, and I will do everything I can to be there.

I’ve been getting quite a few calls about air conditioners struggling in this heat, so I wanted to reshare this quick explanation.

In the video I explain the different furnace filters you’ll find at Menards, when a lower-MERV filter can help improve airflow during extreme heat, and why changing back afterward is important.

If your AC is running nonstop, this may help.

We had a pretty significant storm come through last night, and I know a lot of people across Tea, Harrisburg, and Sioux Falls woke up to downed branches, damaged trees, and a serious mess to clean up.

For the record, my own tree did not survive. It held on for dear life in that wind, but the storm won this one.

If you are in a pinch and need help cutting up branches, moving storm debris, or hauling something out of the way, give me a call.

Why don’t water heaters last as long as they used to?

I just removed this one, and it is a perfect example of something most homeowners never think about.

Older gas water heaters had a much more open burner compartment. You could practically light the pilot, reach your hand into the burner area, and feel like you were starting a campfire in the basement.

Not anymore.

Modern water heaters use a much more enclosed combustion chamber for safety. Fire needs three things: fuel, heat, and oxygen. The gas and ignition are already there, so the water heater has to pull oxygen through small intake openings and screens around the sides and bottom of the tank.

The problem is that most water heaters sit in mechanical rooms, basements, laundry areas, or utility closets—the exact places where dust, lint, pet hair, and everything else tend to collect.

Look at the intake screen on this one.

That water heater has been trying to breathe through all of that.

When those openings become restricted, the burner may not get the airflow it needs. That can lead to poor performance, nuisance shutdowns, pilot problems, overheating around components, and additional wear on the water heater.

A simple way to help protect your investment is to keep the area around the water heater clean. Vacuum the floor, remove lint and dust from the exterior intake openings, and avoid stacking boxes, laundry, or other clutter against the tank. Do not disassemble the burner compartment unless you know exactly what you are doing—but keeping the outside clean can make a real difference.

Water heaters are getting expensive, and many modern units seem to reach the end of their lives much sooner than the old ones did. These days, getting six to ten years out of one is common. Meanwhile, I occasionally walk into a basement and find a water heater from the 1980s still working.

Of course it is.

Some of us built in the ’80s are still out here working every day, too. Apparently, they just don’t make us like they used to. 😂

Take care of your equipment. Give it room to breathe. A few minutes with a vacuum is much cheaper than replacing a water heater.
