This sandwich probably looks pretty simple.

Garden lettuce. Garden tomato. Protein bread.

What you don't see is the hours of weeding, watering, mulching, hauling compost, chasing critters, buying supplies, and learning more about growing tomatoes than I ever thought I'd want to know. 😄

If I had to calculate the real cost of this sandwich... let's just say I probably shouldn't.

A few years ago I taught a homesteading class through adult education. That class turned into a monthly homesteading group, and somewhere along the way it became something even better. We've become a community of friends who swap ideas, celebrate successes, laugh at failures, and somehow always end up talking about much more than gardening.

This sandwich is a little reminder of why so many people dream about the homesteading lifestyle. It's the satisfaction of growing something with your own hands, knowing exactly where your food came from, and enjoying wholesome ingredients you nurtured yourself. Then you get to enjoy it on the porch after the work is done.

And I have to admit... it was one seriously good sandwich. 🍅🥬❤️

Confession...

There are days I have to negotiate with myself just to go to the gym. 😂

"I'll go tomorrow."
"I don't have time."
"I have too much going on today."

Sound familiar?

Then I go anyway.

And almost every single time, I leave wondering why I made such a big deal out of it in the first place.

And I've noticed the same thing happens in real estate.

Sometimes people put off calling a REALTOR® because buying or selling a home feels too overwhelming.

They imagine paperwork, stress, decisions, and a hundred things they don't understand. They hear the horror stories from friends and family.

So they wait.
Then they finally make the call...

And the first thing they usually say is, "Wow, this isn't as big of a deal as I thought it was going to be."

Funny how often we do that to ourselves.

Most of the time, we're making things more complicated than they need to be.

Whether it's getting to the gym, making an important phone call, or taking the first step toward buying or selling a home...

Sometimes we just gotta do the thing.

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀?

According to HousingWire Daily and The Builder’s Daily, a proposed 50% tariff on many Canadian goods could affect cement, plywood, glass, doors, and heating and ventilation equipment.

The effect of this proposal alone may be limited because many Canadian construction products are already subject to tariffs, and Canada supplies only a small share of the cement used nationally. The larger concern is the cumulative impact of tariffs on lumber, steel, aluminum, copper, cabinets, and other essential materials.
Maine could be particularly sensitive to changes in Canadian trade because of our close economic relationship and reliance on imported fuel, lumber, and building supplies. Maine businesses have previously warned that tariffs can raise material costs and potentially delay or cancel residential developments.

Earlier reporting by the Portland Press Herald estimated that tariffs on Canadian goods and steel could add as much as 10% to some homebuilding costs. That would place additional pressure on workforce and affordable-housing projects that are already difficult to finance.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝟱𝟬%. It means builders may face greater uncertainty when ordering materials, estimating expenses, setting prices, and scheduling construction. Industry organizations are also expected to continue seeking exemptions for critical building materials.

In the coming months, I’ll be watching negotiations between the United States and Canada, local material prices, changes in new-construction costs, and whether higher building and renovation expenses affect Maine’s housing inventory, affordability, and resale values.

Do I ignore my own advice and wear it anyway?

Also yes. Yes, I do.

So I guess I earned the enthusiastic dog scratches all over my leg from the sweet fluffy greeter who was absolutely convinced I was their new best friend. 😂

I'll wear these battle scars with pride and think of that adorable face every time I notice them while they heal over the summer.
