Something to think about if you own vacant land or a camp that you don’t visit frequently. Please don’t think it doesn’t happen here. It does.

Property fraud occurs when a scammer forges a deed to sell or transfer property that does not belong to them. The Maine Registers of Deeds Association offers an alert system for property owners which will tell you if your deed has been transferred. Although it is not a fraud prevention mechanism, it will however help victims of fraud be notified sooner than later.

Somerset County landowners are now able to SIGN UP FOR THIS ALERT system here: https://searchiqs.com/fraudalert/?CC=MESOM

Unfortunately, adding water to a private well is discouraged and, in many cases, not allowed under Maine law. A well isn’t designed to act as a storage tank. If the water table is low, any added water will likely drain away. More importantly, introducing water can contaminate the aquifer with bacteria or other pathogens. For short-term needs, it’s best to use bottled water. Check with your municipality to see if there are any community water resources. You can work with a licensed well driller or pump installer to discuss emergency or long-term solutions, such as installing a cistern or holding tank system that can safely be filled with delivered water, or consider deepening or otherwise modifying your existing well. You can find licensed professionals through the Maine Well Drillers Commission. Find links to more resources and tips on the Maine Drought Task Force web page or the Maine CDC Drinking Water Program’s, Drought in Maine webpage.
