✨ LAND OF OZ RETURNS ✨ Closed since Hurricane Helene, the magical Land of Oz is scheduled to reopen this year!

What wonderful news! This magical 1970s theme park really does sit “way above the chimney tops” on the highest resort on the East Coast. With oversized purple mushrooms, giant faces carved into trees, waterfalls, and swirling colors along the Yellow Brick Road — it takes on an authentic psychedelic 70s experience even today.

Unlike most theme parks, which bulldoze the land to develop a new park, this wonderland was literally crafted into the mountaintop’s natural landscape, giving it a very natural feel. The creator even walked on his knees so he could see a child’s perspective as he crafted the magical surroundings.

Sadly, after a flurry of popularity in the early 1970s, the park faced fires and burglars. It was abandoned for several years before being revived in the 1990s. Folks began taking their kids to see the place they remembered so fondly from their childhood.

They announced they would reopen in September, 2026, the park has teased that exciting new things are coming — but hasn’t shared much more. I can’t wait to see what they’ll reveal!

Due to extreme cold weather causing treatment process interruptions at the Timothy G. Broome Water Treatment Plant, Johnston County has declared a temporary water shortage advisory. Johnston County Public Utilities is asking all customers to immediately refrain from all non-essential uses.

In addition, customers should check for plumbing leaks on frozen pipes and plumbing as they thaw. The County expects the water shortage advisory to last no longer than 24-48 hours. Staff is working to correct the problem and restore normal operations. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience.
