I purchased a LifeVac last year after seeing its inventor on a home shopping channel, believing it would be a valuable tool to have on hand, especially when dining out. Little did I know that I would soon find myself in a situation where I needed it. While dining at a local steakhouse, I experienced a choking incident, becoming the very person I had always thought would be someone else. My server attempted to assist me but was unsuccessful, prompting a gentleman at the bar to perform the Heimlich Maneuver, which ultimately saved me. Although this procedure can lead to broken ribs, the restaurant's protocol involved calling the police and EMTs, leading me to the emergency room. There, I learned about the potential for lung blockage, resulting in a CT scan, and I left with bruised ribs. After conducting some research, I discovered that LifeVac is manufactured on Long Island, and I visited the company to share my experience, emphasizing my mission to ensure that everyone has one in their home and vehicle. I am now reaching out to local restaurants to raise awareness about this life-saving device, and I believe it should also be included in school safety measures.
