City Improvements
• The sale of the First Baptist Church property (approx. 9 acres) was completed in December. First Baptist Church will build their new church on property off Atlanta Rd. The City will work to firm up the concept plans over the next 36-40 months with input from citizens. Then, the City will work with developers to implement the plans. The stone Chapel will be converted to a performing arts center
• StillFire Brewing expected to close on sale of property 1/31 and should finally be able to begin construction
• A Splash Pad is planned for Riverview Park
• The City of Smyrna has purchased the current IGO Church property for development of a community park and indoor recreation space
• S. Cobb Drive Redevelopment Plan has received funds from both the State and Federal governments. The plan is to provide street scaping, access roads and parks, work beginning in 2027-28 (section between Concord and Windy Hill)
• Other SPLOST funding will be used for paving city streets, possibly some within Bennett Woods!
• The CVS at Concord & Hurt Roads will be a Daycare Center
• During the Christmas season, the Support Smyrna organization and the Hunt Team Realty Group provided gifts to about 196 students
• New restrooms and a playground by the Library should be completed by Memorial Day
Opportunities and Feedback
• The Tolleson Pool is being rebuilt and will be closed for the next 2 summers. This is a necessity given the safety risks posed by crumbling infrastructure. One complete, there will be 2 pools (one recreational and one competition) along with a new building for restrooms, lockers, snack bar
• There are currently 232 streetlights out in the City. There is a contract with Georgia Power; however, they are not responsive. The City will continue to work with Georgia Power to get them fixed
• Corkey asked for feedback regarding the traffic calming islands on Concord. Feedback was they are not working to prevent cars from speeding
• There were questions about the status of properties like Cantrell Auto Repair/Christmas Tree lot and Ken’s. In all these instances, once the City approves the development plans, the City cannot do anything when/if development is delayed
• Public hearings will be held to discuss the City's intent to opt out of the Homestead Exemption (HB581). The City of Smyrna’s floating homestead exemption provides a greater benefit to the taxpayer than the new statewide adjusted base year ad valorem homestead exemption. The meetings will be held in the Council Chambers on the following dates: Monday 2/3 @ 7pm; Thursday 2/13 @ 6pm and Monday 2/17 @ 7pm
