Thinking about retiring to Virginia? Here’s some $Dollars and Sense

When people begin thinking seriously about where they want to retire, taxes inevitably enter the conversation. Florida, Tennessee and other states with no individual income tax tend to get much of the attention.

But taxes are only part of the equation. And for many retirees—particularly those considering a move from the Northeast or the Washington metropolitan area—Virginia deserves a closer look.

Summertime… And the living is easy

Summer may be the best season at Spring Hill Farm. Enjoy the ease of one level living from the charming cottage overlooking your refreshing pool and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Mid-summer tends to bring out out the most extraordinary sunsets too, especially after a cooling thunderstorm that wakens the fireflies and tree frogs.

As early as the mid 18th century Scottsville was the largest port town on the James River which was the most active trade route serving Virginia’s vibrant farm economy. Today one can enjoy a much quieter small town with pride in its heritage and a charming Main Street with boutique shops and eateries.

I have lived on a hobby farm my entire adult life with room for horses, chickens, gardens and pets. I’ve never felt equal to crop farmers, truck farmers, beef and dairy farmers or any other farmers that get up at 4:00 AM and go to bed right after supper. I’d like to thank them for their service! Real farming is really hard work and fraught with the vagaries of weather, market conditions and politics.
