During my appraisal career I have lived and worked through 6 recessions.
I have observed a lot by watching (Thanks, Yogi!)
You would think from listening to the media – that world is coming to end…. again!
Granted – each recession is serious. Each recession has different causes – and this one is the strangest of all since it’s the government that has shut down the economy.
So here’s some things to keep in mind:
• The economy – and especially real estate - goes in cycles. We WILL come out of this and there will be another economic expansion.
• Do not listen to the media. You’re smart enough to understand data, economics and recognize hype, speculation and completely unsupported opinions. BTW: Being on Youtube or being a celebrity or politician does not make someone credible. They are not experts.
• We are trained to listen to market participants. Watch, learn and listen to what they are doing. Talk to people who know. Talk to people who have no political agenda – just an economic one.
• To my appraiser colleagues: Here’s a practice tip: Take notes while all this happening. Keep a timeline. It will be helpful down the road. People get distorted memories as time passes.
Yes – these are extremely difficult times, but we will come out on the other side of this!
We always do.
