The next weather system moves in later this evening. There may be a mix of rain and snow to start, before changing to all snow, sometimes heavy, and then back to a mix or just drizzle before clearing out early Monday morning. Temperatures will stay near freezing through this event. The heaviest snow will fall across the north, and will be wetter than recent events, causing slick road conditions. Although accumulations will generally be light, remember to Drive Slow on Ice and Snow!

The second, main batch of snow will spread across the area late this afternoon and persist overnight. 8-12” is expected for most areas with lesser amounts near Lake Michigan. The winter storm warning has been expanded to cover our entire area. The heaviest snow will be from 5pm – 1 am with snowfall rates exceeding 1”/hr for several hours. The snow will also be fluffy leading to low visibility and blowing/drifting. Wind chills will be zero to -10. Travel is not advised tonight. Snow will exit by Tuesday morning but significant impacts will likely linger through the morning hours. The next chance of snow arrives late Wednesday into Thursday.

Scattered lake effect snow showers will move back into northwest Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan today, but snow accumulations are expected to be less than an inch. Widespread light snow is expected to overspread the area tonight north of US 24, along with a greater potential of more organized lake effect snow shower bands across Berrien and La Porte Counties. Storm total snowfall accumulations across far northern Indiana into southern Lower Michigan for tonight into Saturday afternoon are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches with localized amounts in the 3 to 5 inch range due to lake effect snow showers adding onto the totals. Be prepared for slick road conditions tonight, even in association with the lower expected snow totals. A reinforcing shot of arctic air will build into the region Saturday night into Monday with wind chills of 5 below to 15 below zero at times.

Another round of snow moves through today. 1/2 to 2 inches is expected. Those near the Michigan state line will see closer to 1/2 inch, while those toward U.S. 24 can see 2 inches. The evening commute could be slippery. Cold tonight with some lake effect snow showers.

We’re prepared for the freezing rain/snow and whatever else Mother Nature throws our way!

A strong front will bring a rain and snow mix today, changing to all snow tonight with the highest accumulations near and north of the Michigan line. Behind this front, arctic air will pour into the area tonight, bringing a flash freeze as temperatures fall to 15 degrees by daybreak. Bitterly cold air will be over the area for most of the next 7 days with wind chills below zero much of the time. System snow is expected late Saturday and Saturday night and then again on Monday night.
