Many years ago, when I was in high school, Westinghouse came to Halifax County. I can still remember the excitement! We heard new families were moving here, which to us teenagers meant new kids in school and, of course, maybe a few cute boys and girls!
Many of those families built beautiful homes in a new neighborhood called Balmoral. But they brought so much more than new houses. They brought new ideas, new experiences, new energy and became part of the fabric of our community.
Over the years, Westinghouse also gave many local people opportunities to build wonderful careers. People started at the ground level, continued their education, earned college degrees and MBAs, and built better lives for themselves and their families. The impact on Halifax County has lasted for generations.
Having lived here for 74 years and having sold real estate here for 30 years, I truly believe the expansion of Hitachi Energy is one of the greatest opportunities Halifax County has ever been given.
It will bring jobs, investment, new families and new opportunities. It will draw attention from other companies looking for places to invest, and I believe IperionX is a wonderful example of the kind of growth that can build upon growth.
But perhaps what excites me most is the opportunity for our children and grandchildren. For years, so many of our young people have gone away to college and had to leave Halifax County to find the careers they wanted. What a wonderful thing it will be if more of them can come home, build their careers here, raise their families here and become the next generation investing in this community.
Will every part of growth be perfect? Of course not. Growth brings challenges. But if 80% of what comes from this opportunity is good for Halifax County, I believe we can work together to handle the other 20%.
Hitachi Energy is making an extraordinary investment in Halifax County, and the ripple effect can reach far beyond one company or one plant.
Hitachi is not in the real estate business, but growth creates a need for homes, neighborhoods, businesses, restaurants, services and so much more. It creates opportunity.
I am excited about what is happening in Halifax County, and even more excited about what it can mean for the generations who come after us.

I want to applaud Ryland Clark for his wonderful presentation and for encouraging us to think about our community's future.
Just this week, I gave a community tour to a doctor being recruited to our area, and it reinforced something I see all the time. People are not just choosing a job or a house. They are choosing a community and a quality of life.
They look at our parks, recreation, trails, restaurants, shopping, arts, gathering spaces, and amenities for people of all ages and abilities.
With the exciting growth of Hitachi Energy, IperionX, and other opportunities ahead, we need to think about quality of life right alongside economic development. We want people not only to work here, but to live here, raise their families here, retire here, and truly become part of our community. FALL IN LOVE WITH HALIFAX COUNTY, VA!
I especially loved Ryland’s message about focusing on what we can build together rather than what we have to choose between.
This is an exciting time for Halifax County. Let's raise our expectations of what we can do as a community. Let’s dream a little bigger about what our community can become as we grow.
