What a gorgeous video of Cave Rock with some amazing information and great reminder from 👇🏽
Cave Rock
For the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, De’ek Wadapush (“Standing Gray Rock”) is a sacred place tied to creation stories, spiritual practices, and cultural identity. It’s not just a landmark—it’s understood as a place where the physical and spiritual worlds connect, which is why some describe it as the “spiritual center of the Universe.”
From a visitor’s perspective, the panoramic view of Lake Tahoe is stunning. But from a cultural perspective, the rock carries generations of meaning, ceremony, and reverence. That’s also why there have been ongoing efforts to protect the site and encourage respectful visitation—like staying on designated trails and avoiding climbing on the rock itself.
In the 1930s, tunnels were blasted through this sacred rock to create a road — a decision the Washoe people have long viewed as a desecration of a holy place.
Today, we have a choice to do better. We ask our community to please not climb on top of Cave Rock. What may feel like an adventure spot is, in truth, sacred ground. Choosing to stay off the summit is a simple way to show respect and help preserve its significance.
If you visit please:
• Do not climb on top of Cave Rock
• Keep your energy respectful
• Leave no trace
More than beauty, this is sacred land — let’s honor Lake Tahoe the way it deserves.
