Dan and Kelly – Rental Assistance Keeps Aging Couple at Home

When Dan and Kelly received notice of a rent increase on their Cape Cod cottage, they faced an impossible choice: leave the home where they had spent the last sixteen years of their lives together or fall behind on payments. Living on a fixed income, the couple struggled to keep up with rising housing costs that have affected so many long-time residents across the Lower and Outer Cape.

That’s when their neighbor connected them with the Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC). Having utilized their services in the past, the neighbor knew that LCOC could help the couple through their financial assistance program. A volunteer advocate reviewed their situation and provided immediate assistance. LCOC agreed to cover two months of past due rent, helping the couple avoid an eviction action. LCOC also made several referrals to partner agencies to craft a longer-term solution that would keep them stably housed. The LCOC team also worked directly with the couple’s landlord to develop an intervention plan to prevent them from falling behind again.

Today, Dan and Kelly remain in their home, surrounded by the memories and community they cherish. “This help meant so much to us.” Kelly shared. “It warmed my heart to find so many wonderful people who were willing to support us. Knowing that the help came from our neighbors makes it even more special.”

Every day, the Lower Cape Outreach Council strives to provide neighbors with critical emergency support that is delivered with compassion, understanding, and kindness. By addressing immediate crises and creating sustainable solutions, LCOC’s programs help ensure that the Lower and Outer Cape remains a place where long-time residents can continue to live with dignity and stability.

With the cost of living on Cape Cod nearly a third higher than the national average, LCOC is here to assist seniors on fixed incomes struggling to remain in their homes. Donor support and compassion allows LCOC to help these Cape Codders and connect them to other services, including our food pantries and holiday programs.

LCOC Helps Marcus, a Young, Single Father, Stay on the Road and on Track.

For Marcus, a young single father living in Eastham, his car is more than just transportation – it’s a lifeline. It gets him to work, transports his daughter, Lily, to preschool, and connects them both to family and essential services across the Lower Cape.

When his aging sedan broke down one morning on the way to his job at a local landscaping business, Marcus suddenly faced a crisis. The repair estimate was more than a month’s rent; without a vehicle he risked losing both his income and his daughter’s daycare placement. A close friend recognized Marcus’s anguish and immediately referred him to the Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC) for financial assistance. Within forty-eight hours, the team reviewed his circumstances and worked with the garage to cover the full cost of the repairs. Through this partnership with a trusted local mechanic, LCOC ensured the car was back on the road by the end of the week – safe, dependable, and ready to meet Marcus’s daily needs.

While in the office discussing his situation with the volunteer advocate, Marcus reviewed his monthly budget and received feedback to help him manage future emergency needs. Among the most helpful to Marcus was a referral the agency’s food pantry, which could reduce his monthly grocery budget by nearly 60%.

“The advocate at Lower Cape Outreach gave me more than just the funds to repair my car,” Marcus said. “They gave me the push I needed to show up – for my daughter, for my job, and for our life here.” Today, Marcus visits his local LCOC food pantry every week and continues to work full-time, confident that he can keep moving forward.

Even before SNAP benefits were withheld this fall, food insecurity on the Cape was reaching a crisis point, with one in three individuals not always knowing where their next meal would come from. Donor support funds the stocking of our nine food pantries on the Lower and Outer Cape and an emergency financial assistance program—all of which are experiencing increased demand this season.

KEYS TO KINDNESS!! Every single dollar helps!! Kindly donate here: https://tinyurl.com/4rtwstau

From Kate Wibby, CEO of Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC):

For many residents of the Lower and Outer Cape, winter poses increased hardships and challenges. Cuts and interruptions in food assistance, along with spikes in health care coverage, will make this season even more challenging. The high cost of living and a shortage of affordable, year-round housing also make it increasingly difficult for working individuals and families to meet their basic needs while contributing to the local economy.

Shorter and colder days, high home heating and utility costs, greater food insecurity, transportation challenges, and a slow off-season economy will adversely affect thousands of Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC) clients, including children, working adults, and seniors.

As you look forward to the joy of the upcoming holiday season, please consider our neighbors who are struggling, and give the Gift of Hope as generously as you can. There is no greater gift during this time of year. Your partnership will make this holiday season a more hopeful time for everyone and a more vibrant place for all.
