For most home buyers, the purchase of real estate is one of the largest financial transactions they will make. The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® conducted its annual survey on recent home buyers and found the following:

First-time buyers made up 32% in 2023, up from the previous year’s 26%. This increase is still below the 38% average seen since 1981.

The typical first-time buyer was 35 years old in 2023, slightly down from 36 in the previous year, while the typical repeat buyer age fell to 58 years from an all-time high of 59 years.
