There is a lot of misinformation out there right now about the NAR (National Association of Realtors) settlement. Below are a few quick points to hopefully help explain the settlement and the proposed practice changes.

1. The settlement still needs to be approved by a judge. If it is approved, the agreed upon practice changes will go into effect mid-July 2024.
2. Even before this settlement, NAR did not set commission rates. Commissions have been and will continue to be negotiable.
3. Commissions being offered for a listing will no longer be advertised in the MLS but are still an option consumers can pursue through negotiation and consultation with a real estate professional.
4. Realtors working with a buyer will be required to enter into a written agreement with their buyer prior to touring any homes. This has long been something NAR has encouraged but not required.
