Hello everybody. We hope your summer is off to a wonderful start. Some of you had asked if Lucy's Place was taking rentals for the 2025 season. I just approved the 2025 rates today - we wanted to bring them down a bit as the rent inflation of the past few years has gotten out of hand. Weekly rates are down an average of 10%, and we have also included the "return rental" discount so be sure to ask for it when you book. Happy summer! Tom

Hello. We plan to reduce prices a bit next season. We think they have gotten too high. We should be live for 2025 reservations by the weekend. Thanks. Tom and Christine

Good morning from the Outer Banks!

Lucy's Place opens back up for guests today after a long break. We hope that all of our regular guests can make it down again this summer and enjoy the great outdoors and low population density in Southern Shores. Christine and I have been here since the beginning of the Covid pandemic and have gotten a lot done to get ready for our 7th season. You'll notice a lot of changes that will add to your enjoyment:

We built a new Garage/carriage house on the west side of the lot. It gives us a workspace for bicycle repair and woodwork, and has allowed us to de-clutter the bicycle closet in the main house. The carriage house matches the main house (same paint and trim), provides privacy, and helps block the sound of cars from Duck Road. The upstairs apartment is reserved for our private use. The two yards are separated by a split rail fence and a gated arbor link the two buildings. I built the arbor myself to keep busy during the pandemic!

Landscaping - We cleared a lot of pricker bushes and poison ivy; and planted new trees and bushes (2 fig trees, 6 dogwoods, 2 blueberry bushes); Unfortunately the pricker bushes grow back like there's no tomorrow and the local deer seem to love to eat the leaves of the fig trees and the white and pink dogwoods (but not the red dogwoods - go figure!). We are trying to find a way to encourage them to eat elsewhere, or to just eat all the prickers. We transplanted one of the cape myrtles in front of the house because it was shedding black pollen and discoloring the front steps. We know many of you take family pictures on the front steps during your stays. Hopefully this will make your family pictures more attractive.

We added rain gutters and rain barrels to protect the decks and provide water for the new trees and bushes. I built a bicycle rack for the old beach cruisers that used to fill up the bicycle closet (lots of time during the pandemic!).

We refreshed furniture in the living room (two new couches, bigger, with more seating area), and in bedroom number 5 (new nightstands and dresser), and a new rug in the top floor master bedroom. The Roku device in the living room is set on guest mode, so if you prefer streaming your TV you can log onto your own account. All rooms still still have cable boxes, Sonos, and Netflix.

Down in the pool area we added another large table, chairs and parasol for seating, and cute little white cocktail tables for the lounge chairs so you have a place to set you drink and your book.

The biggest change is one you won't see but will definitely feel. As many of you know, we designed the top floor great room to maximize the natural light, with big sliding glass doors facing east, south and west. So the area is flooded with light year round, but in the summer it can get quite warm. Cranking the AC to cool the great room often meant the top floor master bedroom and library -- on the same HVAC zone -- were freezing. So we've added a new HVAC zone on the top floor dedicated solely to the great room. The top floor master bedroom and library have a separate thermostat, located in the master bedroom. It should help make the whole floor more comfortable. In addition, we added a whole house de-humidifier which should make everybody more comfortable in summer by reducing the crazy Carolina humidity. Just remember to close the doors!

That's about it. We hope you all have wonderful summers. Bring bandanas to wear when you go shopping -- they are required at the local ABC store! -- and remember that all the local restaurants are doing carry out and delivery, and the pizza is as good as ever! Welcome back to Lucy's place and enjoy the beach!

Greetings from Lucy's Place! The pool is open, and the water is wonderful. We've been sheltering in place here since Valentine's Day and it has been great. We've gotten a lot of maintenance and repairs done, and have our fingers crossed the OBX opens up for visitors soon. Out of state homeowners are allowed back onto the sounder starting today. Rumor has it things will open up in May. We hope you can make it down this summer. Bring your bathing suit.

Happy Easter from Lucy's Place!
Some of you may be wondering how it's going here on the Outer Banks during these dark days of the coronavirus. Christine and I have been here since mid February, and we would not want to be anywhere else. The weather has been very nice -- lots of 70 degree days -- and the low population density on the OBX in general -- and here in Southern Shores in particular -- means that we practice social distancing without even trying. Walmart, Home Depot, Food Lion and Harris Tweeter are all open, so we have everything we need. We're getting a lot done at the house (more on that later). Internet is great. Christine is doing French tutoring on line and I've been working from Lucy's Place too.
But there is a downside. In mid-March Dare County closed down the causeway to non residents, including non-resident property owners (like us). The bridge is scheduled to stay closed until the end of April. (That date may be extended, who knows?). So our kids weren't able to join us for Easter, and we can't leave -- if we do, we can't come back. Like elsewhere, all the shops and restaurants are closed, so no eating out or shopping other than for groceries or building supplies. Probably a good thing for the bank account!
So far there have been about a dozen Coronavirus infections reported in Dare County, and one death. That's one too many, but the draconian measures seem to be working. We are making the most of it. Like us, all our friends and neighbors here have been quarantined on the sandbar for two months or longer, so we figure we are all ok and have started socializing again. If we were back in Alexandria we probably wouldn't risk it. Circle Drive is a great place to be. Neighbors from Ocean Boulevard and across Duck Road all come here for walks and bike rides. Local kids not in school come fishing in the turtle pond across the street. (The turtles are all done hibernating and are as numerous as ever.) Again, the low population density means that social distancing is pretty natural. We wave and say hi, but keep a safe distance. I've been going for long bicycle rides every day along the great bike paths in Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. I have a 13 mile loop and a 22 mile loop mapped out, almost entirely on bike paths. I see other bikers and hikers and runners along the way. We wave or nod to each other as we pass. It's really nice.
Christine has been busy in the garden. We cleared out much of the underbrush in our lot, including plenty of pricker bushes and arm-fulls of poison ivy. (I have the rashes to prove it! Thank God for Calamine lotion.). We've planted a couple fig trees which the deers seem to love. (Chicken wire will hopefully end that romance!) We've planted blueberry bushes and hortensias. We've installed rain gutters and rain barrels and are using the rain water to water our garden. I joke with my neighbors that if the corona virus pandemic gives way to a zombie apocalypse, we'll be ready!
Today -- Easter Monday -- it's windy and rainy. We're getting the tail end of the storms that hit Mississippi and Louisiana so hard. Our prayers go out to those folks. But it reminds us just how nice it is to be stuck inside Lucy's Place, with or without a health emergency.
Stay healthy everybody, eventually things will get better. Hopefully the tough decisions our political leaders are making now will pay off soon. We still don't know if the OBX will be open for business this summer. We all hope so, but some things our out of our hands. God willing we will be. In the meantime here's a shot of the Easter sunrise on the Outer Banks. Hurry back!

Well we are back from a glorious week on the outer banks getting lucy's place ready for the season. I rode my Harley down for the end of Bike Week and Christine drove down in the truck. We had Carolina blue skies and 80° sunshine almost every day. Even went for a dip in the ocean. A little cold but not bad. The hot tub was just right after that! This spring we focused on the outside of the house. Spent lots of time on landscaping (3 tons of pea gravel and 60 cubic feet of mulch shoveled by this old man!) , refinished the decks and Redwood furniture in the back, and replaced tired looking chairs and hammocks. And a new TV in the media room and a new gas grill - the old one was getting hard to light. But it wasn't all work. We enjoyed morning coffees on the front deck and watching a family of blue herons nesting by the turtle pond. Saw lots of dolphins at the beach. And the turtles are getting really big! Be sure to feed them when you visit! Here are a few pix
