Twenty-five years ago today, I was a New Yorker who had just landed in Indiana, a fish out of water, homesick for the only place I’d ever known as the most incredible melting pot in America.

That morning I was on the phone with my dad, who was in Harlem. He mentioned there had been an accident at one of the towers. I turned on the TV just in time to watch the second plane hit, live, while he was still on the line.

“Daddy, you need to leave,” I told him. “This isn’t an accident. This is an attack.”

We will never forget.

And for anyone who really knows me — I will always be a New Yorker at my core. 🗽🇺🇸
