🌍 Did You Know? The Baltic States Are Not the Balkans! 🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹
The **Baltic States—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—**are often confused with the Balkans, but they are two completely different regions of Europe, located thousands of miles apart.
Situated along the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are close neighbors, yet each has its own distinct language, culture, and history.
🇪🇪 Estonia lies just across the Gulf of Finland from Finland. Unlike Latvian and Lithuanian, Estonian belongs to the Uralic language family, making it more closely related to Finnish than to the Baltic languages. Estonia is also renowned for its highly developed digital society, with many government services available online.
🇱🇻 Latvia, in the middle of the three, is home to Riga, its elegant capital famous for its remarkable collection of Art Nouveau architecture. Latvia also has one of the oldest national flag designs in the world still in use, with its distinctive red-and-white pattern traditionally traced to the 13th century.
🇱🇹 Lithuania, the largest of the three Baltic States by both area and population, has a language that is particularly important to linguists. Lithuanian is one of the oldest surviving Indo-European languages, preserving many features that have disappeared from most other languages in the family.
🤝 But the three countries share one extraordinary chapter of history.
On August 23, 1989, approximately two million people joined hands in a peaceful human chain stretching about 600 kilometers (370 miles) from Tallinn, Estonia, through Latvia, to Vilnius, Lithuania.
Known as the Baltic Way, the demonstration symbolized the Baltic peoples’ shared desire for independence from the Soviet Union and became one of the most powerful peaceful protests of the late 20th century.
