Obstacles are a part of life. Whether you are building your family, investing in your community, pursuing a calling, or trying to live out your faith at work or school, there will be moments when giving up feels easier than pressing forward. So how can Christians keep going when the obstacles seem overwhelming?
The story of Nehemiah gives us a powerful biblical picture of overcoming obstacles with God. As Nehemiah and the people rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, they faced criticism, exhaustion, fear, threats, and opposition. Yet they continued the work by turning to God in prayer, making practical adjustments, and remembering that God was fighting for them. Their story shows us how faith and perseverance can help us keep moving forward when the work God has given us becomes difficult.
How Nehemiah Faced Criticism and Discouragement
In Nehemiah chapter 4, we find God’s people hard at work, rebuilding the broken walls of Jerusalem. They were not just contending with physical exhaustion; they were constantly bombarded by ridicule and threats from their enemies. One of the leaders opposing them, Sanballat, mocked their efforts, sneering, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall?” (Nehemiah 4:2, NIV). The negativity was relentless, and soon discouragement began to set in among the workers. The people grew tired, the workload appeared overwhelming, and fear crept into their hearts as rumors of attack spread.
Overcoming Obstacles Starts with Prayer
What makes Nehemiah’s leadership stand out so profoundly is his response to these trials. Instead of succumbing to fear, he turned first to God in prayer. Nehemiah wrote, “But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat” (Nehemiah 4:9, NIV). This is a crucial lesson for anyone facing obstacles: prayer is our starting point, not our last resort. When we face criticism, setbacks, or spiritual opposition, God invites us to bring our fears and frustrations directly to Him.
Yet Nehemiah’s wisdom went beyond just praying. He combined faith with practical action. After asking God for help, he made strategic adjustments to meet the challenge. He stationed guards to protect the workers, divided the people into teams so that some could work while others stood ready to defend, and encouraged families to stand together. Nehemiah’s example shows us that perseverance often requires us to adapt our plans. Sometimes, the path to victory means making changes and being willing to try new approaches without abandoning the mission God has given us.
Remembering Who Fights for You
One of the most moving moments in Nehemiah 4 comes as Nehemiah addresses the fear and weariness of the people. He says, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes” (Nehemiah 4:14, NIV). Nehemiah understood that the real battle was not just against human opposition, but a spiritual struggle requiring the people to remember who God is and what God had already done for them. His words still ring true today for anyone who feels overwhelmed: remembering God’s power and faithfulness can renew our strength and courage to keep going.
Throughout this chapter, we see that the people were able to keep building because they had a “mind to work” (Nehemiah 4:6, NIV). Their determination was not rooted merely in their own abilities, but in their trust that God was with them. Nehemiah repeatedly reminded the people that the battle ultimately belongs to the Lord. In verse 20, he declares, “Our God will fight for us.” This truth is echoed throughout Scripture. Jesus himself said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NIV). The apostle Paul wrote, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31, NIV). These promises assure us that God is not distant or indifferent to our struggles. He is present, powerful, and fighting on our behalf.
How to Persevere When You Face Obstacles
So how can you apply these ancient lessons to your life today? Start by taking your obstacles to God in prayer, honestly sharing your fears and frustrations. Trust that God hears and cares for you. Next, look for practical adjustments you can make. Is there a new strategy, a different approach, or a helpful change you have been resisting? Ask God for wisdom to know when and how to adapt while staying true to His calling. Surround yourself with encouragers—family, friends, or a faith community—who can pray with you and remind you of God’s faithfulness when you feel discouraged.
As you move forward, keep your focus on God, just as Nehemiah did. The strength to persevere does not come from willpower alone, but from remembering the Lord, who is great and awesome. When you feel weary or overwhelmed, meditate on God’s promises and let them fill you with hope. Ephesians 6:10-18 encourages believers to put on the full armor of God, standing firm against spiritual opposition with truth, righteousness, faith, and the Word of God.
Overcoming Obstacles with God: Pray, Adjust, and Trust
If you are facing a difficult season right now, do not give up. Take a moment to pause and pray, asking God to strengthen your hands as Nehemiah did (Nehemiah 6:9, NIV). Reflect on what “adjustments” you might need to make, rather than abandoning your purpose. Encourage someone else who may be struggling with their own obstacles. Most of all, remind yourself daily of God’s promise: “Our God will fight for us.”
