Built in 1904 in what was then considered “downtown”, her neighbors were the Exchange Tavern (still in operation), a small grocery and meat market and of course, Spanaway Park and Dance Hall. The park still sits on its 40 acres of lush greenery, but the Dance Hall, which my mother-in-law remembers fondly, was rumored to have burned a firey death. The train tracks ran down old Main Street, less than a block west and surely shook any late risers in this house a good morning with its rumble and whistle blowing through town bringing Tacoma travelers the “span” (10 miles) a way, to Spanaway Lake for a day at the beach. 1915 brought a great war to this country and certainly touched this little town. It’s owners likely lost loved ones and bread winners, forcing them out of their home. Boot leggers pounced on this piece of luck and a speak-easy became part of this place’s steamy past. Gangsters and flappers, secret entrances and shady business deals charm its silent walls. An elderly man knocked on our door in 2010, claiming to have grown up in this house. He and his wife spent an afternoon reminiscing and sharing stories with us about his dad buying the place in 1935. The gangsters had left an array of souvenirs, bottles and debris, along with the house, foundation-less and forlorn. Well, Wes Drake says that his dad poured his heart into the place and deposited his family into it. He finished the upstairs rooms, poured a solid foundation and installed indoor plumbing. His sister recalled ordering the O’Keefe Merrit stove from the Sears catalog. We took her picture standing in front of it. Residents of the house in the later half of that century sent their sons to fight in Korea, watched the Beatles rise to fame, witnessed the construction of the Space Needle for the World’s Fair in Seattle and the imploding of the Kingdome. The Parkland Theater ran their favorite flick and they bought their groceries at the Bargain Basket. Today, cook up an old fashioned meal for family on the original O’Keefe Merrit gas stove with built-in griddle, bake some biscuits with sifted flour from an antique Hoosier Kitchen Queen cabinet, and send one of the kids down to the real dirt floored cellar for a jar of pickles you put up yourself. Enjoy the after-dinner twilight on a porch swing star-gazing, then maybe relax in the jetted tub before retiring to one of the five guest rooms to sleep the night away.
