The rock you are looking at spent most of its existence underground. It only came up because everything on top of it wore away. 🪨

Stone Mountain sits on the northern edge of Wilkes County and reaches into southeastern Alleghany, about seventeen miles northeast of North Wilkesboro. The state describes it as a dome shaped granite mass rising seven hundred feet above its base, made of light grey medium grained biotite granite, and calls it the largest plutonic monadnock in North Carolina. The granite formed from magma several miles down in the earth during the Paleozoic. As erosion stripped away the rock above it, the release of pressure let the mass push upward and intrude into the older rock around it. The curving sheets peeling off its shoulders are that same pressure still unloading.

It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974. Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock inside the park are built the same way, and having three of them sitting this close to the Blue Ridge escarpment is what makes geologists take the place seriously. 🌲 There are four waterfalls, with Stone Mountain Falls dropping more than two hundred feet down Big Sandy Creek, seventeen miles of trout water, better than two hundred species of vascular plants, and thirteen rare plant and animal species recorded in or near the park.

The human part is just as good. Families of English, German, Irish, French and Scots-Irish descent farmed these coves and built their own mills, churches and schools, and the restored Hutchinson Homestead still stands at the base of the mountain. The park itself started in 1969 with 1,463 acres, some of it donated by local people whose land value became the state's matching money for federal grants. It is 14,351 acres now.
