In 1906 when city founder, J.J. Browne planted lilac bushes in his yard in the Browne's Addition neighborhood, he demonstrated that this beautiful flower could not only survive, but thrive in our climate. This sparked a trend that would one day be one of the city's biggest prides. Then in 1912 John W. Duncan planted 128 Lilac Bushes in Manito Park. This became the city's first lilac garden. Once the local residents caught on that these flowers were thriving, they were soon found in yards all over the city.

The "Lilac CIty" nickname was popularized in the 1930s and this led to the first Spokane Lilac Festival in 1938. This tradition continues today, and gives our wonderful city yet another reason to show off her beauty.

Manito Park still claims the largest lilac garden in the western United States. Lilacs have not only been pleasing to the eyes, but they have become a symbol that represents Spokane's resiliency and strong community. 🪻💜
