Fun project out in Thurston County last week. It’s a complex cattle ranch appraisal with a lot of moving parts layered into the value—including active livestock operations, industrial-grade aggregate potential, and conservation factors.

Because of the federal land acquisition components, it’s a full Yellow Book report which always makes for a great technical puzzle to piece together. Grateful to tackle these types of unique resource land assets.

Had to make a quick stop on the way home to catch the views at Mt. Rainier, too. Since I had the drone I threw it up to catch a shot!

I just wrapped up an appraisal/farm management trip through Baca County, Colorado, and across Kansas — from Great Bend and Kingman over to the ranch country north of El Dorado.

It was great to be back where I grew up, but the conditions are a stark reminder of the challenges our producers face. The winter wheat is definitely showing signs of drought stress, and while grass quality looks fair for now, we’re all hoping for some timely spring rain to support the upcoming grazing season.

I’m always impressed by the resilience of farmers and ranchers managing through factors completely out of their control. Grateful for the opportunity to support this industry through appraisal and farm management work. Those Kansas sunsets have a special way of bringing beauty to tough conditions!

Spending the day in Douglas County Washington conducting farm management inspections and meeting with our tenants was a reminder of why this work is so rewarding.

The winter wheat crop across the farms I visited is showing a strong stand in general. While a few spots are looking a little thin, I’m overall impressed with how the crop has hung in there through the season up to this point. Beyond the fields, the views of the Cascades in the distance is a beautiful backdrop to a profession that isn’t always easy.

Agriculture is facing some real challenges right now, and I have a lot of respect for the farmers out there who are putting in the work and making a go at it. I'm grateful to be on the farm management, appraisal, and real estate side of the industry—getting to witness these views and, more importantly, spend time having meaningful conversations with the people who make it all happen.

I just wrapped up a challenging assignment south of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. This wasn’t your standard valuation; we were looking at large acreage complicated by a conservation easement and multiple competing highest and best uses.

When the data gets complex, you have to dig deeper. For this one, that meant leaning heavily on my network of brokers and local experts to truly gauge market impact.

One thing I’ve learned is that if you keep relying on your data and, more importantly, the network you’ve built, you can find the finish line. I am extremely grateful for those in my life who have helped me get here.

Above all, I’m thankful for the opportunity to do this work. There is something special about spending your days out in the field, witnessing God’s beautiful creation firsthand.

The Spokane Ag Expo provided some much-needed perspective this week.

The data doesn't lie—with wheat prices down 10% YoY, the industry is feeling the squeeze. But if there’s one thing I learned from my conversations with local growers, it’s that farmers and ranchers are the ultimate innovators. When the margins get thin, the resolve gets stronger.

Grateful to be part of this resilient industry.

On a personal note: If you saw a toddler attempting to "test drive" every tractor on the floor, that was my son. Start 'em young!

I recently completed the ASFMRA (American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers) course on Valuing Conservation Easements and Partial Interests in Real Estate.

While my appraisal background is firmly rooted in the world of farms, ranches, and agribusiness, this past year has opened up a rewarding new chapter in the recreational and conservation space.

It has been a privilege to work alongside my colleagues on projects for dedicated conservation groups like Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Ducks Unlimited. These assignments are a unique intellectual challenge; they require a deep understanding of both agricultural utility and the specialized rights and restrictions that define a property's long-term legacy.
The best part of this job is solving the "value puzzle" for my clients—providing clarity on what their land is truly worth so they can make informed decisions for the future.

Looking forward to applying these new skills to more complex land valuations in 2026!
