Did you know that the cedar glade ecosystem primarily occurs in the Central Basin of Middle Tennessee? As this map shows, this unique ecosystem is found in Davidson, Rutherford, and Wilson counties, TN—and practically nowhere else. This also means that many of the rare and unique species that call cedar glades their home, like the Tennessee coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis), exist nowhere else in the world.

I love these articles. Congrats to the Merritt Family!!

In Giles County, the Merritt Farm began in 1923 with close to 254 acres. John M. and Carrie Williams Merritt were the parents of five children. The family grew corn and hay and also raised sheep, dairy cows, horses, mules, chickens, and geese. Son Adrian Merritt acquired the farm in 1931 and added hogs. His family, which included his wife, Allie Ragin Merritt, and their three children, worked hard to survive the Great Depression.

Third owner John Marvin Merritt raised cows, popcorn, and hay after he acquired the farm in 1995. His son, Thomas A. Merritt, is the farm’s current owner. Three generations live on the farm, which is still about 254 acres. Thomas’s nephew David Merritt manages the farm and works the land, growing hay and raising cattle. Thomas writes that during the Civil War a large cave on the property was used by the then-owners and their neighbors to hide food and valuables from Union soldiers.
