If you’re buying a home, you’ll probably hear the term earnest money.

Earnest money is a deposit a buyer submits with an offer to show they are serious about purchasing the home. The money is held in escrow by the title company until closing and is typically applied toward the buyer’s closing costs or down payment.

If a buyer backs out for a reason not allowed in the contract, the seller may be entitled to keep the earnest money.
