Real Estate Agent vs REALTOR®
Here are some differences from REALTOR`s® perspective:
Every REALTOR® is a real estate salesperson, but not every real estate agent is a REALTOR®
1. More steps and requirements
A real estate agent in Missouri is someone who took (48h+24h for MO) worth of classes approved by MREC, passed an examination, passed a background check, found a broker, and submitted an application within a specific period. Every real estate agent must extend a license by taking approved classes (12h) every even year.
A REALTOR® must be a real estate professional such as: property manager, appraiser, real estate counselor, real estate broker, or real estate salesperson with
i. valid real estate license
ii. no record of unprofessional conduct
iii. no recent or pending bankruptcy
iiii. Annual dues paid
2. No courts
As REALTORS® we have our own dispute resolution system established by NAR (The National Association of REALTORS®), which consists of mediation and arbitration
3. Higher standards
For REALTORS® abiding by the Code of Ethics is required; real estate agents in Missouri are regulated by Chapter 339 but not the Code of Ethics. This Code ensures that REALTORS® do business with clients` best interests in mind. The Code of Ethics consists of 17 articles, and it`s violations can result in payable penalties that can go up to $5,000
4. More opportunities
As REALTORS® we have access to additional tools, education, and access to more extensive networks. One example would be REALTORS® committees such as RPAC that contribute to real estate legislation.
