Indoor Air Quality has been all over the news lately. And yes it is an issue. Change your furnace filters to ensure maximum efficiency.

I was called by a client to do a mold inspection of the interior of their home, they felt that their home was making them sick. “Sick House” is real. A number of factors weigh in on indoor air quality. A thorough inspection of the home found no evidence of mold, but a check of the furnace and humidifier found a culprit. Household air passes over the humidifier pad when the furnace and A/C are running in the home.

When you change your air filter on the furnace. Check your humidifier pad. I recommend changing the pad annually. As always phone consultation is free!

Daylight savings time weekend! Test ALL your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if possible. Newer units have built in 10 year lithium batteries. Check your units date and replace if within a year of expiration.

Check/replace your humidifier pad and switch the bypass to “winter”. Turn your humidifier thermostat to 50, the ideal indoor relative humidity in your home should be between 40-50%.

Check the dates on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. They have an operating life of 10 years. Replace when needed.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALERT! When is the last time you replaced the humidifier pad? Many homes are equipped with a humidifier attached to the furnace ductwork. This adds humidity to the dry air produced by the furnace during the winter months.

Now is the time of year to replace the pad, before heating season begins in earnest. Most humidifiers have only a few clips or nuts to loosen to gain access to the pad. Put the old one in a bag and take to your local hardware store. They'll be happy to find the proper sized replacement. And while there, purchase a new furnace filter, you'll be set for the coming winter months.

Remember smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are good for 10 years. Replace if beyond the manufacturer date.
