A Little Bit of Building History...
Originally: Mallinckrodt Building
Later: Bank of St Louis
Architect: Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge - 1892

The ornate building at 9th and Washington was originally used as a dry goods warehouse and retail shop financed by Edward Mallinckrodt. In 1940, the building was purchased and converted for banking by The Industrial Bank of St Louis which operated there until The Bank of St Louis took over in 1951.

The building was vacated in 1990. In 2003, Bankers Lofts was one of the last Washington Avenue buildings to be repurposed into classic industrial residences. Already set apart from other Downtown lofts due to the elaborate terra cotta, brick, and marble exterior. Bankers Lofts also boasts a little-known point of historic interest. On the east corner, just above the 2nd floor, you can still see "EM" and "1892" on the ornate terra cotta shield.

A Little Bit of Building History....

Built in 1907 the building was originally known as the King-Brindsmade Mercantile Company. The building was home to many companies over the years including the King Bee Hat Company and Superior Typesetting Company.

Most people notice the faded advertising on the west side of the building for companies like Wrigley Spearmint Gum, King Bee Hats, Buettner Seventh and Washington, and A-K Tablets.

This is just one more 100+ year-old building that shaped the Washington Avenue Garment District. The building is just a short few blocks walk to the home of the new St. Louis City Soccer Club and one block further to the St. Louis Wheel and St. Louis Aquarium.
