Save a baby
Here are some of the amazing feral dogs that are currently living at Stray Rescue!
Many people have heard of a feral cat. But what is a feral dog?
A feral dog grows up on the streets with no human interaction. They live all alone in dilapidated houses, full of darkness, shadows, and loneliness. Typically, they run with other dogs and are VERY dog friendly. When we first rescue them, they don't want to make eye contact with us. But they'll pile up with other dogs for security. When we leash them up, they flail and gator roll. With patience and love, we finally get them walking on a leash out to the play yards, always on their own unique schedule.
This is when their new life begins. Feral dogs are almost always very gentle and love other dogs. They learn that humans are good. They learn to catch treats in the air, chase a tennis ball, and roll around in the grass to scratch their backs. They learn that the hose means we're filling the baby pool so they can swim. They learn that we love them. And before long, they love us, too.
Feral dogs are considered "flight risks" when they go to a new home. That means they are looking for a way out. They'll look up at the top of your fence or keep an eye on every window for you to accidentally leave it open. They might not be comfortable making eye contact or being touched at first. It takes a patient person to adopt a feral dog.
But then...
Watching them blossom, a little bit every single day - learning new things, trying new things, falling in love with people. It's one of the most gratifying experiences out there.
Every feral dog is different. They take different amounts of time to open up. But when they do, watch out! It's awesome and impossible not to feel so much pride and love.
