The #1 question we get from newbies to our area is…”Are there alligators here?”

To which we reply, “If there’s water, there’s potentially a gator!”

One of the best places to see these magnificent, semi-aquatic, reptiles in their natural habitat is a cruise through the Okefenokee.

We recently took this silly-sweet-six-year old to Okefenokee Adventures in Folkston, Georgia!

Our tour guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about North America’s largest backwater swamp and its inhabitants.

❄️ Fascinating Fact! ❄️

Curious how our local wildlife survived the recent winter storm? 🐊

Check this out from the Okefenokee Swamp Park page.

During cold weather, alligators enter a state called brumation. It’s like a slower, less intense version of hibernation! They stay mostly inactive, conserving energy, but unlike true hibernators, they occasionally come up for air or move around if needed.

Even when the swamp waters freeze, alligators have an amazing trick: they stick their snouts above the water’s surface before it freezes, so they can keep breathing. This is called “icing,” and it’s how they survive freezing conditions! One of our ambassador alligators, Coach, is displaying this behavior in the photo.

Nature is amazing, isn’t it? Stay warm, and remember our swamp friends are built for survival!
