When Pearl Harbor was attacked, my grandfather , Nick Costidis, didn’t hesitate. Within months, he joined the U.S. Army, officially becoming a citizen during boot camp. He was assigned to the 12th Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division of the Rangers. After training at Fort Bliss and undergoing grueling jungle warfare preparation in Australia, he was sent to the front lines.
Nick fought in 58 missions, including the brutal campaigns of the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal. On more than one occasion, his courage saved the lives of his fellow soldiers, earning him several medals for bravery.
Hand-to-Hand Valor
His most harrowing moment came on Leyte Island in the Philippines. Nick was attacked by three Japanese soldiers. In a desperate hand-to-hand struggle, he overpowered them. As he moved to take down the enemy flag, he was bayoneted in the stomach.
Nick survived the encounter, but his battle was far from over. Transported to a makeshift hospital and placed in the “St. Peter’s Ward,” his prognosis was grim. Not only was he fighting a life-threatening wound, but he also contracted schistosomiasis, a parasite that would plague his health until a treatment was finally discovered in the 1950s.
