What is winter like in Boise Idaho?

Someone commented on my reel that it’s so cold here 9 months a year you won’t want to leave the house.

I lived in Orange County and Long Beach for 40 years. Last winter was my first one in Idaho. So let me tell you what it was actually like.

1. It’s not 9 months of cold.
Boise summers hit triple digits. Fall is gorgeous. Real winter weather is a few months, not most of the year.

2. The snow doesn’t stick around.
We get snow. It’s pretty, the kids love it, and in the valley it usually melts off in a day or two. This isn’t a snow globe.

3. There are plenty of blue sky days.
Cold and sunny is a real thing here. Crisp mornings, bright afternoons, and the foothills covered in white.

4. Every so often it goes gray.
The inversion settles over the valley and it’s gray for a few days. I’m not going to pretend it doesn’t happen. But drive up to Bogus Basin and you’re above it in sunshine.

5. The snow is close when you want it.
In Orange County, a snow day meant hours in traffic to Big Bear. Here, the ski hill is about 40 minutes from downtown Boise. Snow when you want it, then home to a valley where it melts off.

6. And yes, you’ll leave the house.
You buy a real coat, you keep a scraper in the car, and life goes on. School, sports, Christmas lights, date night. Nobody hibernates.

Here’s the truth other agents won’t tell you. If you want 75° in January, stay in Southern California. But if you’ve been scared off by people who’ve never lived here, come see it for yourself.

Is moving from California to Boise Idaho worth it?

I started researching leaving California in 2020. We didn’t actually leave until late 2024.

Four years of “what if.” Four years of Zillow scrolling at midnight. Four years of waiting until we had every single answer.

Here’s what nobody tells you. You will never have every answer. The perfect time doesn’t show up. The kids are always mid school year, the market is always “weird,” and there’s always one more thing to figure out first.

So we stopped waiting.

We were renting a $1.1 million house in California for $4,200 a month. We didn’t own it. We were never going to own it.

We bought our home in Star, Idaho for $500,000. Sight unseen. Our mortgage is $2,300 a month.

Was that scary? Absolutely.

But sight unseen isn’t reckless when you’ve done the homework. I had four years of homework. I knew the numbers, I knew the area, and I knew we were ready.

And the part we figured out from here? It all came together. The neighbors, the routines, the farms right outside our subdivision, the slower pace we moved here for.

The only thing I’d change is those four years we spent waiting.

If you and your spouse keep having the “what if we just left” conversation, that conversation is telling you something.

What is fall like in Boise Idaho

I lived in Orange County and Long Beach for 40 years. Fall there was a pumpkin spice latte and a Santa Ana wind warning. So now that we live just outside Boise, Idaho, these still catch me off guard.

1. I own a rake. And I use it.
Those gorgeous trees you fell in love with on the house tour? They drop every single leaf in your yard by November.

2. The water gets turned off.
Irrigation water shuts off in October and you blow out your sprinklers before the first freeze. In California I never once thought about my pipes.

3. One day, three seasons.
Frost on the windshield at school drop off. 70° by lunch. Hoodie back on by dinner. There is a jacket living in my car now.

4. Fall is an actual event.
The Greenbelt turns gold. Corn mazes and pumpkin patches every weekend. Apple picking in Emmett. Boise State game days with the whole city in blue and orange. Nobody has to fake the vibe with a candle.

5. Life slows down.
Summer in Boise is floating the river and late sunsets. Fall is the reset. Kids in hoodies at the bus stop, neighbors chatting over leaf piles, everyone home early because it’s dark by dinner.

Now the part other agents won’t tell you. Fall here is short. One windy week and the color is gone. And winter in the Treasure Valley isn’t a snow globe. Snow comes and goes, there are plenty of crisp blue sky days, and every so often the inversion settles in and it’s gray for a few days. The trick? Drive up to Bogus Basin and you’re above it in sunshine.

Would I trade it for 80° in November? Not a chance.
