Winter is coming.

And according to the books, it might get interesting.

The 2026–27 Pennsylvania winter forecast is already starting to sound very Pennsylvania. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac outlook, El Niño could help bring an unsettled winter to the Northeast, which means snow, rain, ice, temperature swings, and probably at least one day where it is somehow 48 degrees at breakfast and snowing by dinner.

Northern and western Pennsylvania could have better chances for some real snowstorms, while central and southeastern PA may spend plenty of time stuck in that annoying battle between snow, sleet, freezing rain, and plain old rain. Pittsburgh could be shoveling while Philadelphia gets soaked, Erie could be buried, and Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, and the Lehigh Valley may once again live by the famous Pennsylvania winter rule: wait five minutes and check the forecast again.

Of course, long-range winter predictions are never perfect, but the early Pennsylvania winter weather outlook sounds familiar enough. Keep the snow shovel handy, leave the ice scraper in the car, and do not put the shorts too far into storage. At some point this winter, Pennsylvania will almost certainly make all three seem necessary in the same week.

I am looking forward to a bit of snow this year. Haven't had a good snow in my area in a few years.
