Not all renovations are the same. Some just stand out.

Everybody’s heard it:
“Plants against the foundation trap moisture.”

Yes. True.

But when that vegetation grows right outside a window, the inside becomes a pretty good indicator of just how much moisture is being held there.

Condensation on the glass.
Debris on the sill.
Peeling paint and deterioration around the frame.

Nature is beautiful.
Just maybe not growing directly into your wall assembly.

One year short of a quarter century ago today — speaking of 🦖🦕 — I graduated from one of the finest U.S. government-sanctioned “universities” in the country.

It almost became a shelf decoration.

Work got busy. Life happened. The crawler started collecting dust — which is unacceptable for something built with tank steering.

So I dusted it off and after debugging the steering code and fixing the pivot behavior, the chassis is finally driving the way it should.

Control it however you want — ESP32, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Bluetooth, ESP-NOW, AI stack. It listens.

That shiny, glassy coating isn’t character. It’s creosote — and it can turn your chimney into a freight train and your house into a serious fire risk without warning.

Here’s the simple rule people forget:
Dry wood burns hot. Hot fires mean less smoke. Less smoke means less creosote.

Unseasoned wood, low fires, and skipped cleanings do the opposite — they cool the flue, make more smoke, and build this shiny fuel on your chimney walls.

If it’s shiny, it’s dangerous. Burn hot. Burn dry. Inspect and clean the chimney!

If you go into an attic and see wires hanging on little white ceramic k***s like this, stop. If you don’t know exactly what this is, do not touch it.

This is knob-and-tube wiring, an old whole-house electrical system. And no, old does not mean dead. These wires are often still energized, including in this attic.

Touching them, bumping them, or moving insulation around them can result in shock, arcing, or fire. There’s no ground, the insulation is brittle, and it was never meant to be disturbed.

Attics are tight, dark, and unforgiving places. One careless move is all it takes.

AFCI/GFCI combo breakers feeding GFCI outlets throughout the house. Somewhere an electrician whispered, ‘Just to be safe,’ and never stopped.

Is it protected? Yes.
Is it protected again? Also yes.

Most of the time it’s not enough.
This time, it achieved… emotional security. 😂
