In honor of America 250, Arlington National Cemetery is highlighting items in its diplomatic artifact collection related to the legacy of the American Revolution. This month’s artifact is the medal of the National Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America.

The National Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America was organized on June 7, 1898, as a unique lineage organization. Membership is limited to women descended from a founder who arrived in the colonies between 1607 and 1687 and an intermediate ancestor who supported the patriot cause during the American Revolution.

Through their patriotic and historical projects, the Society supports veterans, education, commemoration, and genealogical research. Its medal is an eight-pointed, gold-gilt star featuring red, white, and blue enamel. The medal sports a central image of two men shaking hands and is inscribed with “Daughters of the Founders & Patriots of America 1607-1898” and suspended from a gold pin.
