This was my view on that fateful morning 19 years ago. I was on the ferry on my way to class in my first year of college at Fordham University. I was just about to dock with hundreds of other morning commuters ready to start their day when we heard the noise of a plane flying uncomfortably low overhead and was jolted by the explosion that quickly followed as the plane slammed right into one of the buildings that had served as my North Star upon entry to the city and a symbol of enterprise and the opportunity that awaited us after graduation as I looked out of my classroom windows at Curtis High School just months before. For a second, time froze. None of us knew what to do. Shrieks of fear and grief were everywhere. So many passengers were on their way to work in those buildings. Had they caught an earlier ferry, they would have been inside. All Staten Island ferries stood still in the water. Us passengers struggled to get our life jackets on as those of us with primitive flip cell phones tried to get through to loved ones to let them know that we were ok and get some information on what could be going on. Busy cell towers made it hard to get through to anyone. I managed to get through to my grandparents who were relieved to hear from me. Having lived through World War 2 (my grandfather was a veteran), they seemed to know what the rest of us didn’t come to realize yet: this was intentional, and this meant war. As I sat in the middle of the harbor with a front seat view of the burning tower, I couldn’t help but notice the irony of the billowing fire and smoke against the cloudless, picture perfect blue sky. By the time we started moving back in the direction of Staten Island, the second plane had hit. When we docked back home, we had a clear view of the first tower coming down alongside four boats of Staten Islanders. When I made it back to my Randall Manor neighborhood I was greeted by friends who were outside until the sun went down waiting for their first responder parents to come home. Many of them never did. This girl will 9/11.

The closing is different when your clients happen to also be your friends! Congrats to these two who coincidentally closed on their new home on the weekend of their ten year wedding anniversary (we were supposed to be celebrating in Turks and Caicos, but I think a new home was a good alternative, lol)! I love being a part of the journey for so many amazing people! .
