Metrorail opens November 15th in Loudoun County


The Silver Line Metrorail to Dulles Airport and Loudoun County opens Tuesday, November 15, 2022. Consider these tips when preparing to ride.

Operating Hours –Metrorail operates Monday through Thursday from 4 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.; Friday from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.; and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. The opening and closing hours are critical when planning early morning or late-night travel.
System Map – The iconic Metro system map now includes the six new Silver Line stations. Explore the map to see how Silver Line passengers can ride to Tysons, Arlington, and the District of Columbia without transferring to another line.
Trip Planning – Get familiar with the WMATA Trip Planner. Note the feature to plan by arrival time, departure time, earliest trip, or last trip. Get real-time information and updates for connecting to Loudoun County Transit with Transit app.
SmarTrip – Purchase a SmarTrip card and add value online to avoid waiting for a fare vending machine. Metro fares are based on distance. The current maximum one-way fare is $6 on weekdays. On weekends, Metrorail rides are $2 per trip. A SmarTrip card can store up to $300 in value. Register your card to protect the value in case the card is lost.
Parking – The parking fee at Metro garages is $4.95 per day. Fees are collected when exiting the garages on Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. The Ashburn and Loudoun Gateway Metro parking garages allow overnight parking.

Metro to Dulles International Airport is getting closer! You may have noticed that trains are now running on all 11.4 miles of new track from Wiehle-Reston East to Ashburn Station in Loudoun County. That’s because last week, we kicked off “simulated rail service” on the Silver Line Extension. These trains aren’t open to passengers, but the two-week simulated service period allows Metro employees to complete mandatory training and familiarize themselves with the new extension. Metro GM & CEO Randy Clarke invited NBC4 reporter Adam Tuss for a train ride along the extension, where they got a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action that’s getting us closer to opening day.

Happy Thursday, Silver Line Extension friend! Metro begins final phase of testing to open soon!!


As a Metro partner, we remain incredibly grateful for your support as we prepare for the phase 2 opening of Silver Line. We are pleased to inform you that Metro declared Operational Readiness (ORD) today, and our testing and training on the new tracks, stations, and rail yard begins now!

Bike to Work Day registration is open!

Registration is open for Bike to Work Day planned for Friday, May 20, 2022. New and experienced bicycle commuters, including those working from home, are invited to register now and ride to a Loudoun County pit stop celebration on Bike to Work Day.

Loudoun County Commuter Services will host two pit stops where registered participants can pick up free T-shirts, giveaways, and refreshments. Both locations are adjacent to the W&OD Trail. In Leesburg the pit stop will be held at Raflo Park on Harrison Street. The Sterling pit stop will be held in the Sterling Ruritan Club parking lot, just east of Route 28.

Bike to Work Day is coordinated regionally by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Commuter Connections. The event is held rain or shine. Reach out to Loudoun County Commuter Services for assistance publicizing Bike to Work Day within your organization.
