Standing in front of this historic homestead, I couldn’t help but think about how far we’ve come.
This is the Ephraim Bales Place in the Smoky Mountains. Ephraim Bales owned 72 acres here and farmed about 30 of them while raising his family in this small log cabin. No electricity. No running water. No air conditioning. No internet. Just hard work, determination, and a commitment to providing for his family.
As REALTORS®, we spend our days helping people find homes with modern conveniences that many of us take for granted. Walking through places like this reminds me that “home” has never really been about square footage, granite countertops, or the latest technology. It’s always been about family, security, and building a life.
It’s amazing to think that what was once considered a dream home for a mountain family is now preserved as a piece of history. Yet the purpose of a home remains exactly the same.
We have come a long way in today’s world, but there is something humbling about seeing where we started.
What’s one modern convenience you think would be the hardest to live without?
